Live updates on Hurricane Hilary as a Category 4 storm heads into California

Will Hillary become famous ? :

It will be the first hurricane to hit California in 84 years if Hurricane Hilary makes landfall there as a tropical storm.

Hurricane Hilary will add to a summer that has already seen harsh and unusual weather. The fact that the first tropical system to threaten the United States is on the West Coast rather than the East Coast or the Gulf of Mexico is unique in and of itself.

According to the National Weather Service, a tropical storm has only once in the past 100 years made landfall in California, in Long Beach in 1939.

California has never experienced a hurricane-caliber storm landfall.

Observe the storm’s course:

Early on Thursday, Hurricane Hilary formed and is now moving up the eastern Pacific Ocean.

The storm was expected to traverse the Baja California peninsula into the southwestern United States over the weekend and into Monday as of Thursday evening.

Hurricane Hilary intensifies to become a Category 4 storm:

As it headed straight towards California, Hurricane Hilary became stronger and became a Category 4 hurricane, posing a threat to the Southwestern United States with its powerful winds and torrential downpours.

As of early Friday, the National Hurricane Center reported that the system’s maximum sustained winds were 140 miles per hour.

The hurricane was predicted to have “significant impacts” on the Southwestern states this weekend and into the beginning of next week, the National Weather Service warned.
